Don't
miss this visit from the quirky, jazz-influenced Californian rap trio,
comparable to Goldie Lookin Chain, The Beastie Boys, De La Soul, A
Tribe Called Quest, the Pharcyde and Jurassic 5. They took the name
Ugly Duckling because they felt like outcasts from the modern hip
hop scene with all its Gangsta rap. They have a well publicised hatred
for the macho posturing and violent, threatening lyrics that the genre
has become known for and have written many songs about their feelings
towards it.
Ugly
Duckling owe more to old-skool rap than the gang-culture music that's
polluting the airwaves nowadays. It would be great if bands like this
could 'reclaim' hip hop. Their funky, groovy tunes are sure to have
you bouncing along in agreement. For that, they deserve to be heard
by a wider audience. -
